Many of the biggest problems I see in bird and exotic pet medicine aren’t caused by rare diseases.

They’re caused by misconceptions and misunderstandings.

The reality is that exotic pets are some of the most misunderstood animals we care for.

They hide illness incredibly well. Their husbandry requirements are complex. And because data is much more limited, exotic animal medicine frequently requires us to think differently and adapt what we know from other species.

It’s challenging and constantly evolving but it’s also about staying curious, thinking outside the box and advocating for patients that can’t speak for themselves.

Whether you’re a pet owner trying to give your animal the best possible life, or a veterinary professional caring for these species every day, we’re all working towards the same goal: Better welfare. Better medicine. Better outcomes.

If you’re rabbit isn’t eating their body size in hay that’s a red flag 🚩

Hay should make up 80–90% of your rabbit’s diet, and if they’re not eating it consistently, that’s not “normal picky behaviour”. It’s something important that needs attention.

The first step is to rule out a medical problem. Next we look at the type of hay/s on offer, the overall diet and the feeding strategies.

Small daily adjustments can prevent major dental and gut problems down the line.

One of the questions I get asked ALL the time is…

“How did you become an avian & exotics vet?”

And it definitely wasn’t a straight path.

Throughout vet school, and even before hand, I knew I wanted to work with birds, rabbits, reptiles, other exotic pets and wildlife but in such a niche and competitive industry I had no idea how to actually get there or build experience in such a niche area of veterinary medicine.

All I knew is that I was determined to make it happen. Over time, I used my passion and drive for avian and exotic animal medicine to forge a career in this field and I thought it would help to share a little overview of my journey. 🦜🐇

One thing I noticed early on was how little clear guidance there was for students or vets wanting to pursue exotics. That’s why I created a free 10-step roadmap sharing the key experiences, skills, and strategies that helped me build a career in avian and exotic animal medicine.

I completely understand why so many vets and vet nurses panic when they see a sick bird or exotic pet coming down to the clinic.

Especially when most of what you have learnt is about dogs and cats. You know exotic pets are fragile and you are scared you’ll make things worse. Or you don’t even know where to start because the clinical signs are subtle and non-specific and you have no idea what normal vitals are 😵‍💫

But from years of practicing, teaching and training I know that confidence with sick exotic patients can be achieved with proper education and guidance.
